Hazelnut Bastille isn’t due out until mid-2019 for the PC and Switch, but already looks like it may easily be worth the wait.Taking inspirations from the horror and sci-fi movie classics from the 1980s, The Subject presents a mindful first-person puzzle game with a heavy dose of fear around every corner. While there is no official trailer for the game yet, you can check out the latest demo at the game’s official site, where you glimpse more of of our female protagonist’s mysterious journey, and see just how perfectly it evokes the spirit of such SNES legends as Secret of Mana and A Link to the Past. Kikuta apparently fell in love with the game and answered the call when the developers were looking for composers, leading to his inclusion as a special guest. And now not only has it been announced that the game will be headed to the Nintendo Switch alongside the PC version, but that original Secret of Mana composer Hiroki Kikuta will be contributing to the game’s soundtrack. So now we need something else that can truly do a classic such as that justice, but what? Well, how about Hazelnut Bastille, from developers Aloft Studio? The retro-styled homage to 16-bit adventures and JRPGs seems like a natural fit to carry on Secret of Mana’s legacy.
