My own skepticism (and Daughters favoritism) was bested by this album, but it’s still pretty safe sonically, and mostly only meant for gray, melancholy Sundays. It won’t stick in your craw like “Alone…,” but it’s worth repeat plays. Like much of the album, it’s pretty and it instills yearning and existential anxiety. Only three of the album’s ten tracks are in a major key one of them, the presumed lead single “ How,” sounds like a slightly dreamier later- Kings of Leon track. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, that’s just what they do. The rest of the album does little to step outside of the mope train, though, so it only fits that one mood. Call your significant other or your mom immediately after listening. “Alone…” is just as catchy as it is dark, Tonra’s voice reminding slightly of Bjork as she hits higher registers. The “I should get a dog or something” line adds a bit of extra realism, too. It does a very good job of sleepily communicating 20-something dread, largely because it doesn’t dive too deeply into sonic clichés of that style. It’s still quite depressing, bordering on overwrought, but it’s a step up from their older material and maybe for the genre as a whole. It’s got all the hallmarks of electronic-leaning indie rock: stark, filtered synths, drums with delay, plenty of reverb, shoegaze swells galore, etc. That said, Not to Disappear is a solid album, boasting one very killer standout. So, take my biased review with a grain of salt. Plus, their singles just didn’t seem to really warrant the hype.
